「思想」なんて大げさだが、「早寝早起き」も立派な思想であるというから、Then、積極的な「優柔不断」はもっともっと立派かな、というぐらいの気持ち。最近「ネガティブ・ケィパビリティ（negative capability）」という言葉を時々耳にする。ネガテイブな気分に耐える力、宙ぶらりんな状態を維持できる能力という意味らしい。それそれ、あるよね、is。

Still、素早い決断。どんなことがあってもへこたれない。ブレない意志。前を向く。そんな言葉が、巷ではやはりプラスイメージだ。「頑張れ」という言葉も、もともとは「我を張る」という意味で、あまり良いイメージではなかったらしいが、時代の趨勢で、我を張るような人が出世するようになり、それが人々の目指すものに重なってきたのだろう。

But、決断が早いことと結果がいいこととは同じではない。「結果が同じなら、決断が早い方がいいじゃないか」という言い方をする人が結構いる。「結果が同じなら」という前提を勝手に置くずるい言い方だが、そもそも「同じ結果」などどうやって判定するのか、そこまでの思考回路の欠落した物言いだ。「どんなことがあってもへこたれない」、人間というより機械ではないか？「ブレない意志」。確かに隣の頑固親父も、自分の誤りなど絶対に認めないブレの無さだ。「前を向く」と言えば、第二次大戦で日本軍は常に前ばかり向き、決して後ろを見ない精神を強調した。撤退を「転進」と言い換えるようなセコい考え方で、何万人もの若い兵士達を犬死させたのではなかったか。それが今でもプラスイメージなのはどうしてなのだろうか。

「根性」とかいう言葉が私は大嫌いだが、あえて言えば「根性」を振り回す奴ほど「根性」が無いからだろうと思っている。物事には「根性」などで切り抜けることのできないものが山ほどある。その原因やプロセス、結果の予測など、じっくり、ネチネチと考えなければ可能なものも可能にならないことが山ほどある。その思考プロセスの長さ、緻密な思考過程に耐えられず「えいっ、いちかばちかだ」と一切を放棄してしまう。それはいさぎよいなどというものではなく、単なるバカだ。そのバカさを隠すために、威勢よく「根性」などと口走るのだ、I think。ある人曰く、「決断できないことが人間だけにできる思考です」だそうだ。but、よくよく考えてみると、少なくとも3分の1くらいは私もバカの仲間のようである。
