急に秋の気配になった。「暑さ寒さも彼岸までといっても、この暑さはとうぶん続くだろう」と思っているうちに、ぴったり彼岸まで、ということになった。

スーパーにも秋の味覚が並ぶようになった。この葡萄は実は巨峰という種類の葡萄だが、農家さんが作ったものではないので、あのような黒さにならないようだ。あの黒さを創り出すのは、さすがに農家の力というものだろう。But、According to what I hear、今年は日射熱が高過ぎて、色落ちというか、この絵のような葡萄が多くなったそうだ。ちなみに味は黒いものと変わらないらしい。

水彩教室で「秋らしい静物」を描いてみよう、なんて言ってるうちに、いつの間にか「水滴特集」になってしまった。「水滴」の表現は、14世紀ごろの画家たちにとって、腕の見せ場でもあったらしい。フランドル（現在のオランダ）の画家ファン・デル・ウェイデンが、十字架から降ろされたイエスを抱くマリアの涙を描いたのが、ヨーロッパ中の画家の注目を集めたのだという。

その「透明」の表現が画家たちを魅了し続けてきた。同時代のファン・アイクの、恐ろしいほどの「宝石」を投下する透明な光。当時やっと普及し始めた透明のガラス窓を、絵の中に積極的に取り込んだ17世紀フェルメールまで。今でも「透明感」のある絵は人気がある。絵画の黄金時代、スタートは涙という「水滴」だった。
