ブリューゲルの「バベルの塔」が東京都美術館に来ているが、まだ見ていない。ボスやブリューゲルは、ファン・アイク以後の、いわゆる「完成された油絵技法」からみると、一見稚拙な技法にもみえる。
this、白黒の線描に透明な色層を単純に重ねていくだけというシステムは、誰もが子どもの頃に経験した描き方に近い。「稚拙な感じ」はそこから来るのだが、逆にいえば、その気になれば誰でも「こんな感じの」絵は描けそうだ、That's what happens。それはレオナルドやルーベンスといった、私たちに手の届かない天才たちより、ずっと身近=現代性を私たちに感じさせるものではないだろうか。
