「益友」という語を新聞で、初めて知った。益虫、害虫と同じような使い方のようだったから、「害友」もあるかもしれない。
「益友」の語感は最初いい感じがしなかった。付き合う相手を損得で選ぶ感じがしたせいだ。でももう少し読んでいくと、古い友人が「結果として」益友になっている、と受け取れた。おそらく、互いに互いの益友たらんと努力したのだろう。なんとも羨ましい関係だったのだ。
