昨日（7月20日）は一日中クーラーの中にいた。午前中と午後は自宅。数時間を外出先で過ごし、移動の車でもクーラーを使う。汗もかかず、その意味では確かに気持ち良かったが、今朝になって喉の痛みを感じた。少し風邪気味になったらしい。

老人がクーラーを使わず熱中症になるとか、運ばれたとかいうニュースをときどき耳にする。そういう人たちと同じ理由かどうかは分からないが、わたしもクーラーは苦手で、あまり使いたくない人間だ。気持ちはいいがどこか落ち着かない、という感覚。

熱帯夜でも、一晩中クーラーを点けっ放しで寝たことがこれまで一度もない、と言うと友人知人たちは皆驚く。最新のクーラーは、一晩中つけっ放しでも喉を傷めたり、身体が冷えてしまったりすることはないよ、よほど古いクーラーなんじゃない？と最後には笑われてしまうが（事実その通りなのだが）、たとえ最新のものを設置したとしても、たぶんこれまでと同じように、汗をかきながら眠るに違いない。

子どもの頃からずっと、夏でも冷たいものはできるだけ避けていた。家族のなかでも自分だけ。アイスクリームなども、もちろん美味しいと感じるけれど、暑い日が続いても一年間に数個食べるかどうか。Rather、大汗をかきながらでも白湯とかうどんとか温かいものを飲食する。冷水もあまり飲まないが、なぜかビールだけは冷えていてもグイグイ飲めるのが不思議。
