異常な暑さが続いている。「異常」というのは、例えば北海道北見市で昨日（7月24日）最高気温39.0℃（北見市での過去最高）を記録したことなどを指す。「異常」かどうかは、ほんらいは「個人的な感覚」の問題で、例えばインド・デカン高原で40℃を越えたからといって、誰も「異常」などとは思わないが、（涼しいはずの）北海道の北見だから、そういう言いかたをしても、まあ不適切でもないだろう。
夏の暑さでよく話題に上る埼玉県熊谷市（日本最高気温41.1℃.2018、同静岡県浜松市2020）とか群馬県桐生市、岐阜県多治見市などでは、「普段より暑いなあ」くらいにしか思わないかも知れない。ちなみに北見市の過去の最高気温を見てみると38.1℃(2019)、37.2℃（2021）となっていて、第4位以下は37,1℃が2022、2023と続き、10位が37.0℃。つまり、例年なら37℃あたりまでがピークだから、それよりいきなり２℃も高かったことになる。それにしても北海道も、ついに南国化してしまったことの象徴なのだろうか。
教室でのデモンストレーション制作をしてみた。写真にしてみると、「垂直」がかなり傾いていることに気づく。あらためて作品を見ると、この写真ほどには感じないが、垂直線が右に傾いているのは確かだった。
後期印象派の画家、セザンヌの垂直線も10度くらい傾いている。それを指摘している美術書をわたしは見たことがないが、あれは感覚的な“クセ”だろうと思っている。セザンヌの “10度” は、垂直線に対して、どれも同じ角度で傾いているから、わたしは癖だろうと判断したのだが、in my case、よく見るといくらか放射状に開いているように見える。つまり、これは癖ではなく、なにかの原因による「錯覚」だと思う。
水平、垂直にかけては、絶対の自信を持っていたはずの自分の感覚に、ゆらぎを感じざるを得ない。理由はなんだろう。視力が悪くなってきたためか、感覚が鈍くなってきたせいか、視野が狭くなって比較がおろそかになってきたからだろうか、等々。
おそらく一つの原因というのではなく、複合的に重なり合って「錯覚」が起きているのだろう。まあいい。こういうことが自分にも起こるようになってきたということを、自覚しておこう。
