絵画とは「ビジョン」だけで完結するものかも知れない。ビジョンとは、「見えること、もの」をいう。それを「画面に定着」することは必ずしも必要でない。そういう意味ならすでに映画やビデオがある、Or rather、もっとラジカルに、仮に言葉で聞き手の脳に像を描かせることさえできれば、それを絵画と呼んでいいのではないか、In that sense。
あるいはビジョンのリアリティと、言っていいかとも。むしろ絵画にとってはこの方がずっと重要で、「見る人にとって」リアリティの無いものは絵画ではない、と言ったらどうだろうか。当然リアリティとは何か、ということになるが、それは「見る人」次第ということになる。作者はどこへ行ってしまうのか？それでは不特定多数に対して発表する絵など描けないではないか。I know that I can only do what I can't do, but I'm frustrated、作者は作者で、見る人のことなど考えずに、自分のリアリティだけ追求すればいいのだ。作者と見る人の関係が断絶していることにおいて、初めて本当の関係が成り立つのかも知れない…などとぼつぼつ。

「自由に描く」ということと、「好きなように描く」のとは同じことだと感じる人もいるだろうが、私の感覚とはかなり異なる。
私にとって、自由に描く、とは「自在」でもある。勝手気ままに描いても、なおそこに自分がいる=自在でなければならない。「自由」と「自在」のバランスが要る。時には高度な技術も、知識も必要だ。「好きなように」にはそのような制約も緊張も感じない。But、ある境地に達したら、そんな区別など笑い草に過ぎないのかも、とも思う。
もう一ついえば、（これは私自身の偏屈かも知れないが）「好きなように」には、決して画家自身のものだけでない、他人の好み、ことばを変えれば迎合的なものを含むようにも感じられる。
「画家」は、和洋を問わずひとつの「職能」集団としての長い歴史を持っている。そこでは個人的才能など、時には邪魔でさえあった。先に「迎合的」と書いたが、他人の、どのような趣味にも応えられることこそ、画家としての実力であった。アマチュアというものが存在しない時代では、それは当然というより、必然であったろう。そうした中にも、良いものは良く、自由自在に振舞える才能があったことは、過去の膨大な名作群が証明済みである。
それに照らしてみれば、私のいわば「自由論」は、無能なるがゆえの、負け犬の遠吠えということになるだろうか。（この項まだ続きます）
