Hokusai Katsushika and Jakuchu Ito

「奇想の系譜」展が東京都美術館で開催中だ。まだ見ていないが、ぜひ行ってみたい展覧会だ。学生の時（今から44年以上前）。本で読み、以来ずっと私の脳の片隅から消え去ることがなかった、一つの絵画論としての辻惟雄「奇想の系譜」。私の秘蔵書の一つだが、本展はこの本の「視覚化」だ。イメージとしては本の方が強いが、見ない理由はない。

昨年（一昨年？）、若冲展があったが、大評判になり、長蛇の列のおかげで見ることができなかった。見に行った人からの賞賛を聞いたり、図録を見せてもらいながら、「若冲なんてそれほどのもんじゃない」と改めて感じた。人気はマスコミが作り上げた虚像だ。

そう言うからといっても私は若冲の批判者ではなく、ファンの１人である。多くの人がその名を知らない頃から、私には「これが若冲だ」と言う、好きな絵があった。「群鶏図」。若冲にはそれ以上の絵はない。ところが先述の「若冲ブーム」があって、あたかも若冲が日本絵画を代表するかのような錯覚が（一時ファンの間で）起きている。私も若冲は好きであるが、北斎と並べようなどとは思わない。若冲狂いには悪いが、「格が違う」。But、違っていいのである。それが若冲を貶めることには必ずしもならないことが、若冲たる所以だと理解できない人は「若冲ファン」を標榜するのをやめた方がいい。

曾我蕭白も楽しみだ。彼などある意味、「国際作家」北斎を超えている。彼らの天才性を見るということは、私たち真面目人間には真似のできない凄さを体感すると同時に、それが「私たちと同じ」人間のしでかしたことを見る嬉しさを感じる時間ではないかと、期待しているところ。
