An "object" called "original"

クレマチス咲く　ペン、水彩

クレマチスをモチーフ用に２鉢買った。毎年咲いていた、大輪の、ビロードのような青のクレマチスが、なぜか今年は姿を現さない。散歩しながら他所のクレマチスもチラッと見たりするが、我が家のものが一番立派だったような気がして、かなり残念。

ここ2~3年、かなりCGスケッチや動画製作に時間を注いできたので、物理的な物体として手元に残る作品数はぐっと少なくなった。CGだって作品には違いないが、長年邪魔者扱いしながらもキャンバスやスケッチブックに描き残してきた感覚からすると、なんとなく（否、かなり）物足りない感じがする。
　紙に描いたからといって感覚的には特別どうだということもない。But、ここに確かに1枚在るという、安心感のようなものはある。お手軽だが、とりあえずは「オリジナル」って感覚だろうか。CGでも、NFTといった「オリジナル」作品を創ることは出来るが、手描き＝オリジナルという等式には（時代の意味が変わっても）今でもなんとなく頼っている。単なる世代ギャップなんだろうか。

もし、「手描き＝オリジナル」という等式がこれからも不変のものであるならば、これまで数十年も苦労して辿ってきたその不変の道から、わたしは少しはぐれてしまったことになる。この歳になって、やっとCGの世界にほんの一歩だけ足を踏み入れた程度だが、その時「この等式はいずれ意味を為さなくなる」と直感し、道を踏み外すことへの小さな覚悟があったことは忘れていない。

手描きによるオリジナルも、CGによるオリジナルも、社会的にはともかく、制作者個人にとっては実際はそんなに違わないものかもしれない。それにしても、いまだに現代の絵画の値段が数億円もするという現実を見ると、オリジナル=独り占め、という人間の物欲の等式の強さをまざまざと見る思いがする。

画材・技法のスキルについて

ここでの画材というのは油絵具、水彩絵の具とか、紙、キャンバスといった描画材料のこと。YouTubeなどを見ると「いかにもプロ」的な高度なテクニックを駆使した作例がいくらでも出てくる。それを見て一生懸命勉強している人もたくさんいるだろうと想像する。わたし自身もその一人である。

画材や技法などについての知識が増し、使いこなせるようになれば確かに表現の自由度は増し、人目を惹くポイントも作れるようになる。コンクールなどは審査員自身がプロの表現者だから、つい高い技術レベルを求める方向になりがちで、そうした中で選ばれた作品を通じて観衆の意識も審査員たちの美意識に追随していく。もちろん展覧会の大きな意義として「啓蒙」の機能があるのだから、それで良いわけではある。

But、プロになろうとする人は別として、絵を楽しみたいと考える人は、画材や技法についてあまり専門的にならない方が良い、という考えがどうもわたしの心の中で広がりつつあるようだ。知識、技術の向上が悪いはずはないけれど、、それもひとつの見方、方向性であって、それとは違う、ものの見方もあるよね？と。一つの画材、一つの技法のエキスパートになるには相当の努力が要る。その過程でたんに知識、技術だけでない何かを体得することが少なくないことも知っている。Still、、、、せっかく学んだ知識、技能が、一方で自分を限定する力、想像力を硬化させてしまう力として、時にはマイナスにも働くこともある、ということを、ちょこっと頭の隅に置いておく方がいいかも、と思うのである。

絵を楽しむためには少し下手な方がいい、などとうそぶきつつ、わたしは絵画のテクニックを人に教え、もっと上手くなるようにアドバイスもする。But、必ずしも矛盾とも思わない。なぜかというと、絵を描くにも最小限の知識、使いこなしができないと、それ以上の経験ができにくいからである。海外で一人旅をすると多くの経験を得るが、それには最低限の知識や語学力が必要なのと同じである。だからといって、旅行の引率者や語学の専門家になるレベルまで勉強することとは別の話だということ。

でもまあ、専門家になればなったで、もっと高い（深い）愉しみというものもあるには違いないから、下手な方が楽しめるなどと言うのは、できない人（わたし）の負け惜しみの理屈なのかもね。
