昨日（2024.6.30）、東京上野の国立西洋美術館で「西欧中世の装飾写本」の展覧会を観てきました。時間が無かったので、ササっとだけですが、鑑賞者も多くなく、ちょっとだけ高尚な気分を味わえる、お勧めの展覧会です。8月半ばまでやっていますので、暑くて何もしたくないようなときには「教養」がオイシイかも。写真撮影が自由なのも嬉しいです。

彩飾写本はこれまでにも西洋美術館ほかで何度か見たことがありますが、最近では久しぶりです。展示品の多くは、グーテンベルクが活版印刷を発明する２，３百年前のものです。紙からインク、筆、pen、フォントまですべて各寺院、修道院による手作り、手描きの聖書、時禱書や典礼から、掲示する規則などの類まで、多くの書物、書類が遺っているようです。今でもたぶん、一部では伝承されているはずです。

紙はいわゆる「羊皮紙」。羊や牛の皮を薄く薄くなめして、向こう側が透けるほどです。インクはいろんな草木、骨などを燃やし、その炭に脂などを練り合わせて作ります。もちろん家畜の飼育から解体、紙つくり、筆やペンの製作まですべて自前です。ワインやチーズ生産などの農業から、法律、アートなどの文化インフラ、寺院建築から戦争のための武器生産まであらゆる経済産業、文化の土台が、教会やこうした修道院などの中で作られ、広められ、洗練されてきたんですね。ヨーロッパの文化の底辺はこうやって出来上がってきたんだなあ、ということの一端が感じられる展覧会です。

印刷関連デザインで、「モリスの法則」というのがあります。近代デザインで大きな足跡を残したウィリアム・モリスによる、美しいページレイアウトのための、本文と天地、ノドなどのアキとの分量比のことですが、モリス以前にも、あらゆる試みがなされていることがわかります。（写真はすべて会場でのスマートフォン撮影です）
