審査にかかる出品数は毎年1000点を超える。かつては1500点を軽く超え、入選率も3割ちょっとしかなかった。いろいろ工夫をして（良かったかどうかは判断が分かれよう）、入選率は若干緩くなったが、それでも半分以上は選外になる。その中で受賞者になれるのは、たった16人だけ。さらにその上の無鑑査（出品すれば必ず陳列されるという権利）になるには、原則3回受賞しなければならないというルールがある。審査員がほぼ全員入れ替わる現在のシステムの中で、それは厳しすぎるのではないか、という話もちらほら出ているらしい。
会場で何人か知り合いの人と会い、何人かが故人になったことを知った。出品をつづけている人の作品を見ても、すっかりかつての面影のない作品もある（わたしもその一人かも）。But、それはたくさんの作品群の中で見るから。個人の流れの中でじっくり見れば、きっとそれなりの存在価値を持って制作されているのだと思う。
高校生たちの出品はあっけらかんとしている（ように見える）が、入選した作品を見るとモヤモヤした傷つきやすさのようなものを感じる。中には驚くような技量を見せる人もいるが、多くは画面を埋めるだけで精一杯。勉強もあるのだから、それで十分立派だ。部活の先生の指導もあるのか、あまり破綻がないのが、かえって残念と言えば残念な感じ。
入選、受賞率だけ見ると確かに厳しい数字だが、そこに若い（あるいは現役バリバリの）精鋭たちが集まって、過熱しているかといえば、それはない。そういう人たちはもっと厳しい別の世界を求め、作っている。In that sense、県展は現代と同時代進行しながら、過去を重くまとった別ワールドになりつつあるのかな。不自由な脚を引きずりながら、身の丈ほどもある作品を、子どもや孫の手を借りて出品する人たちを見ていると、それでもここに大事な世界があることを知る。
