毎日手を使って生活しているのが当たり前で、わたしだけでなくほとんどの人が「いま手を使っているぞ」などとは意識しないでしょう。意識するのは怪我や病気などで一時的に使えなくなるときくらい。あるいは楽器演奏などで、譜面通りに指動かすことができないもどかしさ、工作などであと一本指があれば！とか思うときくらいでしょう。

手は、便利というよりかけがえのないもので、これが人間を他の動物と隔てる壁になっているようです。手が「手」になっているのは人間と「類人猿」だけです。But、それ以外の動物もきっと「『手』が欲しい」とは思ってもいないし、それで満足しているはずです。人間だけが手の便利さを知っているから、手が失われたとき、それを補うための道具を考え、そして何より「作れる」のです。さすがに「類人猿」でもそれはできません。
