画像編集ソフトにはチュートリアルという、いわば体験学習のビデオがおまけについている。2分とかせいぜい5分程度にまとめられた手順を、一つ一つなぞることで編集の流れと操作を体験し、そのあとで実際に自分のプロジェクトをやる、という流れになっている。

手順１。何がどうなっているのか皆目意味不明のまま、画面をすいすいと説明のカーソルが移動し、ホイホイと場面が変わる。理解できないまま何度も繰り返して見る。あんぐり口を開けたままなのに気づくまで30分も経っている。自分の番が来ても手が動かない。「シーケンスは？」と問われても「は？シーケンス？」。いちいちその意味を調べ、そうやって時間はどんどん過ぎていく。

まる一日かかって、ほぼ成果なく終わる。そんな日はほんとうに気持ちが腐る。「自分には無理なのではないか」「他にもっと意味のある時間の使い方があったのではないか」。英語習いたての中学生が、いきなり本格的な英文の小説を読み始めたって感じかな。単語の意味だけ分かっても場面はぜんぜん浮かばない、そんなつらい読み方。
