パソコンを自作した。といっても私ではなく、ほとんど息子。私は片方を持ち上げたり、ここにこれを差し込んで、とかいう指示に従うだけ。前の時はただ見ているだけだったが、今回は、いくらかは「自作」の気分を味わわせてやろうという「思いやり」。

言うまでもないが、パソコンの重要部品の多くは精密品。CPUだのなんだのまで自作できるはずもない。「自作」の意味は,「自分の使い方に合わせる」ということ。市販品では自分の希望のレベルに少し物足りなかったり、欲しい性能と価格が見合わなかったりする。それで「自作またはオーダー」ということになる。要求する性能と価格を上手に組み合わせれば、それなりの満足感がある。ただ安くしたいだけなら、安い物を買えばいいだけの話。

「自作パソコン」で一番重要なことは、「パソコンで何をやりたいのか」ということだと思う。「パソコンで絵を描きたい」なら、各パーツに要求されるレベル（スペック）があるし、ゲームをしたいなら、やはりそれに見合うスペックがある。水彩画を描きたいなら、油絵具ではなく水彩絵の具を選ぶように。それからあとに製品知識、器用さなどが関わってくる（製品知識などふつうは持ち合わせないから、まめに調べる「検索力」も大きい）。

ひとくちに絵を描きたいといっても、頭に思い描く絵のイメージはひとそれぞれ。パソコンもたぶん似たようなものではないか。パソコンを知らない私などは、「パソコンで何ができるのか」、などと考えたこともなかった。今回、私の希望に合わせて「作ってもらった」『自作パソコン』で、「もっとこんなこともできるんじゃないか」と前向きに思えるように、すこし頑張るつもりでいる。
