「見る」ということが（見る、だけでなく全てのものがそうだろうが）複層的な構造をしているということは誰でも経験的に知っている。複層的とは、「見る」にも、生理的以外に心理的な面など（むしろそちらの方がここでは問題だ）たくさん意味があるということ。味を見る、調べる、検査する、試行する、考えるなど、「見る」にもたくさんの意味があり、私たちはそれらの意味を意識的、無意識的に、切り替えて「見て」いるということ。

なあんだ、国語の問題ではないか、という人もいるだろう。But、私たちが絵を描き、絵を見る時、あるいは音楽を聴く時でも、音に反応し、色に反応し、作者を知ればその知見がまた反応にフィードバックし、その度にまた新しいものが見えたり、せっかく見えたものが失われたりする、現実の「見る」ことに直面するわけで、決してたんに言葉=国語の問題として、済ますことはできない。

そういう意味で絵を「見る」ことは（難しいということではなく）単純なことではない。描くこととほとんど変わらないのではないか、とさえ思える。描く方が、むしろ絵の具の取り扱いやその他のことに取紛れ、対象も画面もろくに見ていないことさえあり得る。
