原発の浜で鰈を釣る

奥は東通り原発。手前は夜間標識灯

二泊三日で下北に、母を見舞いに来た。今年３回目だが、今回が一番短い滞在で、一番安心して下北を後にできる。快方に向かっているというのではなく、日々確実に衰弱していくのを止めることはできないのだが、苦しまずに済んでいる、In that sense。

身体はほぼ骨と皮だけになり、今は点滴だけで生きているが、その骨の太さに驚く。腕利きの漁師だった父（私の祖父）のおかげで、魚の骨までしっかり食べてきたことの証明だ。

起き上がることはできないが、ボケてはいないので、2日間ずっと母の部屋で（病院ではない。自室）、昔話をした。こちらにはできるだけ話をさせて舌や喉の筋肉を使わせようという邪な考えがあるが、どこか別のところからエネルギーを供給されているのではないか、と感じるほどに淀みなく話す体力と、その記憶力の良さに再三驚かされた。

丸々と肉付きのしっかりした若き母を私は記憶している。遠い畑で一人黙々と働き、逞しく磯での漁もしてきた。バカバカしいほどの時間と労力のすべてを家族のために遣い果たした。母の思い出話は、ただの昔話ではなく、自らの肉や骨を削り出して紡いだ物語であり、彼女の母、そのまた母の物語、すべての母の物語でもある。その物語を聞くこと、理解することなしに、母を送ることはできないような気がした。弟と二人でおむつを替え、脚をさすりながら、そんなことを感じていた。
