暑いですね。こちらは今日も最高気温37℃の予報です。エエ~ッ！とかなりそうなものですが、すでに38℃はもうおなじみ。39℃以上も何回かニュース・天気予報で耳にしているのでもう誰も驚かない、というのが驚きです。

時どきAI とチャットします。わたしがAI に慣れるためです。チャットしているうちに、どうもAIって質問されたことの意味が分かってないなあ、と感じることが多くなってきました。単純な質問には驚くほどのちゃんとした文章で回答するのですが、ちょっと細かい部分を再質問したりすると、文章だけが普通で、中身の抜けた“頭の悪い”回答が繰り返し返ってくるのです。しかも「参考になりましたか？」と少し上から目線で。

その意味が、某新聞のデジタル版で読んだ、慶応大学の今井むつみ先生へのインタビュー記事で納得できました。それは簡単に言うと、こういうことです。
「メロンという単語がAIに記録されていても、それは単に統計上の１単語に過ぎず、その意味が理解されているわけではない。but、人間にとっては大きな果物とか、甘いとかいろいろな側面を含む経験や事実が、メロンというモノ自体と結びついて「（単語の）意味」を作り上げている（そのことを認知科学では「記号接地」というらしい）。それがAIにはない。（単語の覚え方が人間とは正反対）
　AIは「メロン」という単語の前後に、「統計上」どんな単語が並ぶかを学習しているだけだから、そこから外れると意味不明の文になったりする（記事を短く改変しています）」

やっぱりね、という感じです。画像生成AIでも似たようなことを感じます。最初は「スゴイ！」と驚きますが、何度かやると「思ったよりバカかも」と感じたりします。「考える」って感覚がないんですよね。次々と出してくるだけ。
　考えてみると、新世代コンピューターでも、それ自体は考えているわけではないのですね。However、巨大な記憶力を持ち（しかも絶対忘れない）、異様な早さの学習能力が、「統計」という武器を駆使して、「（論理的、合理的な）結論」をいち早く導き出してくれているということなのです。その人間なら1000年もかかるような、複雑な計算を数秒でやるとかね。その演算能力を言語生成に結び付けたのが、チャットGPTだったのですね。そういう素地がすでにあったから、あっという間に普及し始めています。
　AIはあくまで道具の延長です（今のところは）。もともとはわたしたちの「手」であり、その「手」をどう使うかはわたしたち自身の問題です。わたしたちがバカなら、AIは恐ろしい道具になる可能性ももっているわけですよね。

それなのに、ニュース・天気予報では最近「危険な暑さ」を連発しています。耳にするだけで2~3度上がるような息苦しさを感じますが、一種の「警報」ですから、仕方ありませんね。スマートフォンにも連日「外での運動は控えましょう」「急ぎでない外出は・・」などの公報が着信します。

ニュースなどによると、「危険な暑さ」は世界中に広がっているのだそうです。北アフリカで発生した熱波「カロン」によって、イタリアなどではすでに40℃以上の気温が数日続いており、さらに数日中に、ローマでヨーロッパの過去最高気温48.8℃を上回りそうだと言われています。中国・新疆ウイグル自治区ではすでに50℃越えを記録したとか。正直言って想像もしたくない気温ですね。
　そういうところで、すべての人がクーラーを使えているかといえば、たぶんそうではないでしょう。クーラーのない人にとって（故障中あるいは経済的その他の理由で使えない人にとって）、本物の「危険な暑さ」だと思います。十年ほど前だったか、同じような熱波がヨーロッパや南北アメリカ大陸を襲った時があり、その時も大勢の人が亡くなったという記憶が甦りました。
　ウクライナ南部では、ダムが破壊されたあとの洪水の影響でコレラなどの感染症が発生し、塹壕などさらに劣悪な環境の中で蔓延しかかっていると報告されているようです。“戦争などしている場合か！”と思いますが、それを止められるのは世界中でたった一人、狂ったプーチン氏だけというのが二重に恐ろしい現実です。

　暑い日差しの中で海水浴をしながら、海岸べりに群生しているハマナスの実を採ったりした子どもの頃のことなど、この異常な世界の中ではまるで夢の中の出来事のようです。いずれにせよ、夏はまだ始まったばかり（確かまだ梅雨明けもしていなかったはず）。どうぞ“ご無事に”この夏をお過ごしください。
