一か月ぶりにまた下北半島・恐山へ行ってきた。

恐山には地獄も極楽も目白押しだが、本当の極楽は実は温泉ではないだろうか？建物の形にはなっているが、まあ露天風呂の延長のようなもの。恐山の山地内には無料で入れる温泉は現在4つ。山門を潜るとまっすぐ地蔵堂の方へ敷石の道を行く。中門を抜けたところに3つの湯屋がある。一番左に女湯と書いてあるが入ったことはない。

写真の「花染めの湯」はそこからずっと離れて、ポツンと人通りから見えないところにある。周りはまだガレたままで、ガスが噴き出したり、荒涼とした雰囲気だ。ここが恐山開山時からの最も由緒ある名湯なのだが、恐山がどんどん観光化し、宿泊施設などがやたらに建設され、それらの建物の陰に隠れてしまった。ちなみに名湯は昔のままの混浴である。地獄に男も女も関係ないのだから、当然と言えば当然か。

恐山に行って、温泉に入らないのは、魚釣りに行って一匹も釣らずに帰ってくるようなもの。but、殆どの人は釣ろうともせずに帰っていく。糸を下げるだけでも釣りではあるかも知れないが、釣れれば釣りは何倍も面白いものだ。暑い中、上り下りで汗びっしょりになって地獄を歩いた後は、やはり温泉は気持ちがいい。温度もぴったり。脚が自然に伸びていく。身体が勝手にほぐれていく。地獄、極楽はセットでこそ有難い。あの世へ旅立つ前の、つかの間の命の洗濯「老人バスツアー」から「極楽」をカットしては、ツアー会社も賽の河原の鬼同然。お湯に浸けて、ほんの数分でもしわを伸ばしてやりなされ。それが現世供養というものではありませんか？
