今日（2013.3.6水曜日）、近くのホームセンターへ寄った。駐車スペースにバックし始めたら急にスピードが出始めた。背後のスペースにも車がある。危ないと思ってブレーキを踏んだが、まったく止まらないどころか、むしろ急にスピードアップした。「ブレーキの故障だ！いや、間違ってアクセルを踏んだか？ぶつかる！！」
何のことはない、隣の車が発進、前進したので相対的にバックのスピードが増したという錯覚だった。たまに並行して走る電車の相対速度によって、進行方向が右へ行ったり、左へ行ったりと感じたりする、アレである。そういう錯覚は若い人にはほとんど無いのだそうだ、残念だが。
「カッシーニ・ギャップ」とは土星の輪が、初期にはリボンのような一つの帯だと考えられていたものを、17世紀の前半にイタリアのアマチュア天文学者のジョバンニ・カッシーニが、その輪には実は隙間（カッシーニ・ギャップ）があり、実際には数本のリングになっていることを発見したことをいう。
カッシーニにとって土星の輪が複数だと知ったのは、観測の結果だったが、それは「もっと詳しく知りたい」という情熱がもたらした現実だ。私にとって、結果としての現実が今、なのだろうか。
