へびいちご

「実のある生活」という布教用のプログラムを、かつて英会話を教えてくれたアメリカ人宣教師から頂いた記憶がある。内容はきれいさっぱり忘れてしまったが、なぜか題名だけは覚えていた。

わたしの散歩コースにも「実（じつ）」はないが、「実（み）のある道」がある。そのうちのいくつか紹介しましよう。

「へびいちご」はまあ、まめにハイキングなどへ出かける人でもなければ、名前くらいは知っていても、実際に見る機会はほとんどなくなっているのではないだろうか。わたしの散歩コースでも、1か所しかない。それも少し草の中へ入ってやっと気がついた。
　上から②③は同じものですが、名前は解りますか？「カラスノエンドウ」です。カラスのように黒くなるから、そういう名前がついたんですね。つい1，2ヶ月前はきれいな紫の花をつけていたのに、季節の変わる早さに唖然とする。④⑤は、都会でも道端にいくらでもある、イネ科の「カラスムギ」。これも言われてみれば・・というところでしょうか。

これらはいずれも食べることができます。But、おいしいわけではなく、無毒というだけ。「だけ」と簡単に言ったけれど、ほとんどの植物は多かれ少なかれ「有毒」がふつうだと考えておく方が無難です。植物も、昆虫などの食害に対して、自分を護るための策として毒が必要だからです。毒の無い（あるいは人間に対して弱い）植物を「野菜」という、と前に教わったことがある。日本ではイネ科、マメ科の植物は種類も数も多い。風土に合っているのだろうと思う。
