芸は身を助く : 馬が描く絵

「馬が絵を描き、それで自分の身ばかりか、他の馬も助けている」という記事を読んだ。数年前にアメリカで話題になったニュースらしいが、それをイギリスの記者があらためて書いたものだった。

馬の名前は「メトロ」。もとは競走馬で、その地方では8勝もした、かなり知れた馬だったらしいが、膝に故障を抱え運命が尽きかかっていた。そこへたまたま奥さんの乗馬用にと、安い馬を探していた画家と巡りあった。

メトロの、口であれこれ咥える癖を見て、こいつに筆を持たせたら面白いかも、という発想が画家的だ。メトロもなぜか、「草を食うより絵を描く方が好き」らしく、やがてたまってきた絵を画家が地元のセールに出した。Then、あっという間に４点も売れた。By the way、ショーで像が花の絵を描いてみせるようなものとは、レベルが違う。なにせアシスタントはプロの画家である。

地元バーモントで話題になり、それを大新聞が取り上げたことで、一気に全米の話題になった。注文が相次ぎ、その収入で新しい治療法を試すこともでき、膝の故障も克服。moreover、同じような運命を辿る他の馬も助けられるようになったという、馬版アメリカンドリーム。今も沢山の人が彼・メトロ氏の作品の待機リストに並んでいるそうな。

By the way、当の画家はメトロ氏のアシスタントとセールに忙しく、画家は休業中だとのこと（記事は2014時点でのこと）。

不または非・「晴明」

なんだかイラついている。何かハッキリした不満というより、あらゆることに清々しい明朗さがない、That's how it feels。今頃の天候などをさす俳句の季語に「晴明」というのがある。晴れやかさと爽やかさが混じったような気分・天候のことだが、どうもそれとは逆とまでは言わないが、「不または非・晴明」という気分なのである。

「感謝」という言葉が、急激に嫌な言葉になってきた。冬季オリンピック、パラリンピックが先頃行われた。昨日から春の選抜高校野球も始まった。ここでも「感謝」「感謝」の嵐。この言葉を口にしないとすかさずどこからかクレームがつく。曰く「あなたの今日あるのはあなた自身だけの力ではない。周囲の力添えがあってのこと。その感謝の気持を持たない人は大人ではない」。

that's why、実際に大人ではない小学生、はては幼稚園児まで「皆さんのお陰でーちゅ」と「練習」させられる。そのようなクレームからの過剰回避である。

ごく普通のことをしたのに、「思いがけなく」ありがとうと言われるときの「晴明さ」と、それは似て非なるものだ。「感謝」の言葉は求めるものではなく、自発的なものであるはずだ。それが単なる「形式」になり、形式でよいとするそのような神経のあり様が、どうやらイライラの中身のような気がしてきた。
